My friend and fellow nomad Jay Meistrich (co-founder of Moo.do) and I were chasing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in Tromso Norway when another fellow traveler in our tour group said they were SO happy to finally check this off their “bucket list.”
Seeing the Northern Lights is pretty freakin’ awesome but Jay commented that bucket lists suck and I agree.
A bucket list is a list of things you want to do or accomplish before you “hit the bucket” aka DIE. I’m pretty sure this list has gotten quite long over the years. Then I have to ask…how much DOES get checked off your bucket list?
I am willing to bet – NOT MUCH. You put things on a bucket list to do later and later comes…and it still doesn’t happen. And it’s OK because it’s a bucket list! You still got time! There’s SO MUCH OTHER STUFF that you gotta do NOW that’s much more important….really? What’s more important than living your life?
A bucket list sucks because it is a form of procrastination. I think it’s stupid to place some experience or goal on a list and wait years to accomplish it (if ever).
Are you going to wait until you’re middle-aged or elderly and realize you’ve wasted your golden years doing everything else? It’s going to be crappy when you take a look at that list one day and wish you made the time to do some of those things. I’m willing to bet if something is put on that list, you’re not going to do it.
WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WANT TO DO?
Learn that second or third language (Here’s a TED Talk article on how). Go skydiving (Find some places here). Write that book – or take some writing classes. Visit a different country every year – I can get you going. Take that road trip. Start a blog (using SquareSpace, WordPress, or hire someone) Find a life coach and get motivated? Whatever it is – get to it.
JUST PLAN IT AND GO DO IT.
A bucket list seems like a list of goals without a time frame and no way of holding yourself accountable for it. It’s just a false sense of setting goals and it implies that it’s OK to not achieve any of these goals because it’s a bucket list – the list that is seemingly the least important when it’s probably the most.
Because when you’re dead, you can’t do anything. You’re cold & lying six feet deep in the ground.
