What is mental toughness?
“Mental Toughness” is keeping strong in the face of adversity. It’s the ability to keep your focus and determination to get through life when the going gets tough. You need to develop mental toughness because life is not always pretty and rarely goes the way you plan. Mental toughness is not letting problems derail you and outlook on life.
Travel will develop your mental toughness. It will test how tough and resilient you are. Travel will teach you how to be resourceful and keep calm when problems occur.
Lost or got your passport stolen? You can have a meltdown or you can figure out next steps on what to do.
Flight delays or missed connections can leave you unraveling or you can figure out what you need to do to get where you want to be.
The key is to prepare for the likelihood that things may not go your way. If you’re afraid of missing a connecting flight, make sure you book your itinerary with plenty of time in between to get to the plane. Make sure you have a copy of your itinerary and passport printed (with multiple copies) as well as on the cloud where you can access it on your phone or a computer.
Need to meet someone or be at a place? Leave 20 minutes early in case you get lost. They key is to prepare if and when disaster strikes because if it can, it will.
Learn to manage your expectations to develop mental toughness. Lack of control can lower your morale and make you feel a little crazy so remember to be flexible. Let things go and do not dwell in the past. If your luggage got stolen, cry about it for a moment but then take steps to resolve the issue and move forward. There’s no use crying over spilled milk. Just clean up the mess and get another glass.
Flexibility and the ability to adapt to situations are key components to laying the groundwork for strong mental resolve.
- Use critical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving techniques on your own so you will trust your instincts more.
- Resist the urge to blame others or yourself.
- Also resist the urge to expect too much from people
Keep emotions in check
During travel and the roller coaster of life, you will want to cry and have a mental breakdown at times. There IS a time and place to break down and let all go but in a stressful environment, you’ve got to remember to stay calm. BREATHE. Develop mental toughness to keep your emotions manageable.
One way to build emotional resilience is to accept the situation and own up to it rather than seeking comfort or feeling helpless. You are NOT helpless. You can’t control everything around you but you can control your reaction to it. Be calm, focused, and figure out the next steps to get where you need to be and fix the situation.
Get comfortable being uncomfortable because You can’t get stronger if you stay in your comfort zone all the time. Learning to be comfortable with uncomfortable situations will force you to learn from the situation instead of escape from it.
Remember, mental toughness is about building the strength and resilience to do the things you need to do and the things you want to do.
